Advice on your new puppy:

Diet

Your puppy presently has 4 meals a day – at 7a.m. midday, 5pm. and 10p.m. Meal 1 - Porridge with ½ cup of oats, and half/half goat’s milk and water with a few added vegetables. Add a little meat or pilchards for taste. Meal 2 – 4oz raw meat e.g. minced lamb, beef, tripe (green tripe is particularly good for dogs …pity about its smell!), small pieces of heart and very occasional pieces of liver. Meal 3 – as meal 1 Meal 4 – as meal 2

He/she also has about 2 cups of goat’s milk and water each over the course of the day. Gradually add more and more water over the next two weeks until he is having plain water. Goats’ milk is better than cows’ milk due to the puppies intolerance to the high lactose content of cows’ milk

We also feed raw chicken wings and bones. (NEVER give cooked bones/chicken wings to dogs as they can splinter and cause damage. Raw bones are readily assimilated by the dog and the calcium is invaluable. Chicken wings also keep teeth plague-free.)

From about 4 -6 months of age he should be cut down to 3 meals a day. By about 6 months feed just twice daily.

Gradually increase quantities until your adult dog is having about ½ kg meat, plus bones, vegetables and about 1 sm. cup of oats made into porridge per day + veg/small amounts of fruit. (These amounts are suitable for a dog weighing about 22kgs.)

Supplements:

  • Cod liver oil: ½ teaspoons twice a week
  • Garlic paste: about 3 cm once a day mixed into any meal (garlic controls fleas and other parasites)
  • Apple cider vinegar: one teaspoon to 1 meat meal. This is good for prevention of arthritis and stomach upsets such as salmonella – though dogs’ stomachs are pretty tough!
  • Green Ark powder (available from Landywoods …see Links on health page) which contains various green herbs.
  • Missing Link supplement (available from many suppliers …see links on health page) which contains Omega 3.

Adult doses:
  • C.L.O – 1 teas. daily
  • Garlic – 3cms. daily or a clove
  • A.C.Vv. – 1 tbs. per day

Worming

At 5 weeks your puppy was given 10 drops of wormwood/black walnut tincture daily for 5days. Available in little dropper bottles at Health stores such as Holland and Barratt – about £5 for a year’s supply.

Repeat this at 8 weeks and 12 weeks and then a couple of times a year. (Double the dose.)

Vaccination

We do not vaccinate our dogs as we have a very strong belief that this is detrimental to their immune system. Your puppy is being treated with homeopathic nosodes according to the following programme:
  • At 4 weeks – a pill twice daily for 5 days
  • Then 1 pill per week for 4 weeks
  • One pill per month for 6 months
  • Annual – twice daily for 5 days only

DO NOT TOUCH THE NOSODES.

Tip a pill into the lid of the container, open pup’s mouth and throw right to the back. Stroke his throat until you are fairly sure it has gone down. We have included extra information about vaccination which we hope will interest you.

If you do vaccinate your puppy, please follow the advice of the American Veterinary Medical Association of not giving unnecessary annual boosters.

Arriving Home

When your puppy arrives home, give him/her some time and space (supervised) to explore the new surroundings. This is a very traumatic time for a puppy, not just leaving his mother and litter-mates but also his familiar surroundings. If the pup wants to sleep (and puppies sleep a lot) please let him to do so and do not allow children to interfere with him while he is resting.

Toilet training – take him outside whenever he wakes up and after every meal; use specific words to encourage him to perform and praise him when he does. He is very clean and always goes out of the dog-flap to poo in the garden. However, he still regularly wees inside the house but mainly on the newspaper provided. It can take some time to completely house-training him and accidents are going to happen. Please do not get angry or impatient with him as this will achieve nothing good.

A puppy is a very energetic and demanding animal; should you find this Vizsla trait too strong and the puppy too energetic for your situation PLEASE DO NOT RE-HOME HIM . Passing dogs from owner to owner unsettles an animal and can make a dog unpredictable. Please call us and we will take the dog back. (01453 511562)

Going Out

Your pup has already been exposed to our 3 dogs and many people, including children. He is well-socialised, friendly and confident. It is very important to continue to introduce him to other people, and from about 10 weeks, to other dogs. (The second part of the nosode course will be completed by then.)

General Health

The pups have been checked regularly by our local vet and come to you with a letter of good health. There should be no reason for having them checked again unless you are concerned about something specific.

Homoeopathy

Although you will be given enough nosodes to complete his course until February we hope you will continue to use them annually. Visit Ainsworth's for information on nosodes, etc.

Why do we use homoeopathic remedies? - because they work. It is not hocus pocus.

Healing With Homoeopathy

Homoeopathy is a branch of holistic medicine, and it involves the use of various plants, minerals and other biological substances in very small doses, with the goal to stimulate a pet's natural healing defences. Homoeopathy is based on the application of the 'Law of Similars', or like cures like, in which a homoeopathic medicine (homoeopathic remedy) is used to create a reaction that is similar to a symptom of a particular disease. With a sick pet, the symptoms we see are actually the results of the efforts of the pet's body to re-establish balance or wellness, and the thought is that by using a treatment that would cause symptoms close to what the pet is experiencing, you will induce your pet's body to build natural defences.

Scientific Studies

The Lancet (September 20, 1997) published a review of 89 double-blind or randomized placebo- controlled clinical trials (Are the clinical effects of homoeopathy placebo effects? A meta-analysis of placebo-controlled trials). The authors found that homoeopathic medicines had a 2.45 times greater effect than placebo overall. Their conclusion: "The results of our meta-analysis are not compatible with the hypothesis that the clinical effects of homoeopathy are completely due to placebo."
